Mutator is a web app, with phone apps whose plans are billed by Apple or Google (per its Terms), run by Bitnook GmbH of Bern, Switzerland. It generates short UGC-style videos and photo slideshows and schedules them to connected TikTok, Instagram and YouTube accounts. You add a product and a character (a face Mutator draws, or your own) and then work in one of three ways: describe a scene and get a 3- to 15-second clip; pick a 'format' from its library and make a batch of posts from it (the homepage lists '3s UGC hook', 'POV app showcase', 'Founder talking head', 'Green screen react' and 'Unboxing', among others); or paste a TikTok of up to 15 seconds and have it 'cloned' with your character, product or room swapped in. Finished files go to a library. Since 20 September 2026, according to Mutator's API documentation, nothing goes out until a person puts a particular file into a particular account's schedule; from then on it posts at the scheduled time. Generation runs on Mutator's own provider accounts (its privacy policy names Higgsfield and fal for images and video, and Anthropic for captions and content checks) and is paid for in credits. There are three plans: Pro at $39 a month for 1,000 credits, Growth at $89 for 2,000 and Studio at $199 for 4,500, with 20% off when billed yearly. Mutator says a video costs 20 credits and a picture 1, but its free generator pages quote 50 credits for a 5-second clip. Every paid plan includes a public API, an MCP server for AI agents and a ChatGPT app, and by Mutator's docs none of them can schedule or publish a post. Per its generator FAQ, no real creators are used. All of this was read on 2026-10-20.

  1. Formats, made in batches

A format is 'the shape of a post' (llms.txt). You build one once and make 'as many posts from it as you need in one sitting'. The homepage library includes '3s UGC hook', 'POV app showcase', 'App screen recording', 'Founder talking head', 'Green screen react', 'Day in the life', 'Tutorial in 15s', 'Unboxing', 'Meme cutaway' and 'ASMR b-roll', across niches from fitness and SaaS to real estate.

  2. Clips of 3 to 15 seconds from one sentence

You type what happens and pick the shape, '3 to 15 seconds and captions'. Per the how-it-works page, 'With sound on, a line in quotes is said out loud.' Mutator paints an opening frame with your character and product in it and then animates it. The support FAQ says a video is made 'in one pass, in parts of up to fifteen seconds'.

  3. Reusable AI characters

The homepage calls an influencer 'a set of choices you make once. Face, body, wardrobe, voice, personality.' You create the character under References, and per the support FAQ every clip that names it 'keeps the face, the body and the voice'. You can use your own face instead, under the consent rules in the Terms.

  4. Photo slideshows and carousels

Every format in the library also comes as a slideshow: 'Three to six photos in order, with the text set on each one, a cover and a caption'. On TikTok it posts as a photo post and on Instagram as a carousel.

  5. TikTok clones

You paste a TikTok link, upload an MP4 or pick a video from your library: 'Up to 15 seconds, with a person in it, and yours to use'. You tick 'I own this or have permission', and Mutator 'redraws the first frame with your change and every caption gone, then moves it exactly like the original'. You can keep the original sound or get new music.

  6. Per-account posting schedules

Each connected account has its own posting days and times, and the clips you add go out 'in the next open slots'. A schedule fills up to 14 days ahead in the workspace time zone. On 2026-10-20 the Connections page listed TikTok (videos and photo posts), Instagram (Reels, images and carousels; the support FAQ adds 'from a Business or Creator account') and YouTube (Shorts). Pinterest, X and Bluesky were badged 'SOON'.

  7. A person picks every post

Approvals were removed on 20 September 2026 (API docs). Now 'A run publishes nothing at all' (support FAQ): its output goes to the library, and a post exists only once someone picks the file, the account and the time. 'That choice is recorded against the person who made it.' Once something is scheduled it goes out at its time, and the homepage FAQ says 'it is never posted twice'.

  8. API, MCP server and ChatGPT app on every paid plan

The HTTP API uses keys with read and write scopes, sends signed webhooks (media.created, run.finished, generation.finished, post.published) and allows 120 reads and 30 writes a minute per key. Its OpenAPI 3.1 document needs no key. The MCP server is listed in the official MCP Registry as app.mutator/mutator and returned 16 tools on 2026-10-20; a separate ChatGPT server has five. By the docs, no endpoint or tool can schedule or publish a post. The Zapier, n8n and Make apps are described as written but not yet listed, and the docs explain how to use generic webhooks until they are.

  9. Spending ceilings and up-front quotes

Spending ceilings 'are enforced before a provider is contacted' (llms.txt), and the MCP docs describe them as daily and monthly. The ChatGPT app has to quote a price first, and it makes nothing if the job would cost more than the price you agreed. Starting a run or a generation through the API needs an idempotency key, so a retry returns the first answer rather than making a second video.

  10. Performance feedback

Mutator reads views, watch time, clicks and similar figures from the accounts that published (privacy policy) and 'feeds that into what it makes next' (llms.txt). 'Deeper analytics', Flows and A/B variations start at Growth.

  • Brands and small teams that want a steady flow of UGC-style TikTok, Reels and Shorts posts and want a person to sign off every post before it goes out
  • Developers and AI-agent users who want to generate content from code, Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor with no route from the agent to publishing. API and MCP access start on the $39 plan
  • Accounts that mix short clips with photo slideshows (TikTok photo posts, Instagram carousels) drawn from one format library
  • Testing hooks and formats cheaply — images cost 1 credit, and failed runs give their credits back
  • Agencies running several brands — Studio includes 10 client workspaces and 10 team members

Look elsewhere if

  • Fully hands-off posting. By design nothing posts until a person schedules it, and by Mutator's docs no API, MCP tool or integration can schedule a post
  • Fixing a per-video budget before you sign up: Mutator's pages quote both 20 and 50 credits for a 5-second clip
  • Using it as a media archive: generated files are deleted after 90 days
  • Campaigns that need a real creator, location or hands-on demo. The generator FAQ says 'there is no creator to brief, pay or wait for'
  • Ads that present an AI character as a real customer: the Terms forbid using a drawn character to pass as a real person
  • Posting to Pinterest, X or Bluesky, all badged 'SOON' on 2026-10-20
  • Buyers who need a long operating history or third-party reviews before they commit

Pros

  • Nothing reaches a social account until a person has scheduled it. By Mutator's docs, no API key, MCP tool, ChatGPT action or Zapier, n8n or Make step can schedule or publish a post, and each post is recorded against the person who scheduled it. That suits brands that do not want an agent or a timer publishing content nobody reviewed
  • Trying it needs no card: new accounts get 100 credits, and /start makes 'your first three posts before you pay anything'. After that, the first month of Pro is $9
  • Failed work is not charged: a failed or cancelled run returns its hold, an output the content check withholds is not charged, pictures cost 1 credit, and publishing, scheduling and analytics cost no credits (support FAQ, Terms, cost guide)
  • API and MCP access come with the $39 Pro plan. The pricing page ticks them on all three plans and the API docs say 'Keys come with any paid plan'. The API requires an idempotency key to start a run or a generation, signs its webhooks and serves its OpenAPI document without a key
  • The Terms set a clear ownership line: 'You keep ownership of everything you put into Mutator and everything it produces for you. We claim no rights over your content beyond what is needed to run the service for you.'
  • Video clips, slideshows and clones sit in one workspace, with scheduling to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube and 'Connect as many accounts as you like' on every plan
  • The money-back rule is stated plainly: a full refund within 7 days of your first payment if you have used no more than 20% of the plan's monthly credits. EU and UK consumers also get a 14-day right to cancel a plan, refunded minus the days used
  • Data handling is documented in detail: you can export or delete a workspace, or delete your account, from Settings; the privacy policy gives retention periods for most kinds of data; and a data processing agreement is available on any plan
  • Month-to-month billing on every plan, cancelled 'in one button' on the billing page, with access to the end of the paid period. Swiss law governs the Terms, and as of 2026-10-20 we found no arbitration clause or class-action waiver in them

Cons

  • Mutator's own pages give two prices for a clip. The homepage, support FAQ and cost guide say a video is 20 credits ('A silent five-second video is 20'). All 14 free video generator pages we loaded on 2026-10-20 quote 50 credits for their default 5-second clip, and their length slider showed 100 credits for 6 to 10 seconds and 150 for 15. We could not tell whether the 50-credit quote includes sound, which the support FAQ says 'costs more'. At 50 credits, Pro's 1,000 credits make 20 clips at about $1.95 each, not 50 at $0.78 (our arithmetic)
  • Generated media is deleted after 90 days (privacy policy), and API download links expire after six hours. The record of what was published survives, but the files do not, so download anything you want to keep
  • Plan credits expire at the end of each billing period and do not roll over (Terms). The cost guide puts it as 'There is no saving them up for a big week later'. Only pack credits and credits Mutator adds itself carry over, and as of 2026-10-20 we found no credit-pack price on the pricing page, Terms, support page or docs
  • Bigger plans cost more per credit: Pro works out at 3.9 cents a credit, Growth 4.45 and Studio 4.42 (our arithmetic). Growth and Studio buy Flows, A/B variations, deeper analytics, seats and client workspaces, not cheaper generation. On Pro a format can't run on a timer: the API docs' example refusal reads 'Scheduled runs are part of Growth.'
  • Some of Mutator's own pages disagree. The Terms say 'There is no free trial' and that plans are 'billed monthly', while the pricing page sells a $9 (Pro) or $39 (Growth) first month, which the cost guide and API docs call 'the trial', and yearly billing. The MCP server is described as having nine, 14, 15 or 16 tools depending on the page, and Pinterest is badged 'SOON' while the privacy policy describes creating pins. Details are in the pricing notes
  • The refund window is tight for video. The 20%-of-monthly-credits limit is 200 credits on Pro: 10 videos at the stated 20 credits, or 4 at the generator pages' 50-credit quote (our arithmetic). Each customer gets one refund, packs can't be refunded once any credit is used, in-app purchases are refunded by Apple or Google, and the Terms rule out refunds for part-months
  • Disclosure and likeness duties fall on you. The Terms make you responsible for 'the disclosure requirements that apply to AI-generated and commercial content', note that Mutator's own AI label can be switched off, and forbid using a character Mutator draws 'to pass as a real person'. The AI UGC ad generator page offers 'Video ads that look like a customer made them', and Mutator's own guides advise labelling AI clips. A real person's photo needs that adult's agreement, and you must be able to show it
  • The Clones feature copies the motion of another TikTok. Mutator asks you to tick 'I own this or have permission', and the Terms leave the rights to what you publish, and compliance with platform rules, with you
  • Short track record. Bitnook GmbH was entered in the Swiss commercial register in June 2025 (Zefix). As of 2026-10-20 we found no Trustpilot profile for mutator.app, Product Hunt's Mutator page read 'No reviews yet', the blog read 'Nothing published yet', and the Zapier, n8n and Make apps were described as not yet listed
  • Total liability in any twelve-month period is capped at what you paid in that period. The service is 'provided as-is', with no promise that a platform will accept a post, and scheduled work 'may be delayed by a provider outage'. Prompts and media pass through Higgsfield, fal and Anthropic in the United States, and Anthropic 'may keep anything its own safety systems flag for up to two years'

All figures read on 2026-10-20. CURRENCY: USD. We loaded the pricing page with five browser locale and time-zone settings: en-US/New York, de-CH/Zurich, ja-JP/Tokyo, en-GB/London and en-IN/Kolkata. Each time it showed the same dollar prices, monthly and yearly. The page's schema.org offers give priceCurrency 'USD', and the Terms state the plans in dollars ('Pro at $39/month, Growth at $89/month, Studio at $199/month'). All loads came from one network connection, so we could not test whether prices change by IP location. BILLING TOGGLE: the page opens with Monthly selected. On Monthly, Pro shows '$39' struck through beside '$9 first month', then '$39/month'; Growth shows '$89' struck through beside '$39 first month', then '$89/month'; Studio shows '$199 /month' with no first-month offer. Switching to Yearly ('20% off') shows '$31', '$71' and '$159' with '/month, billed yearly', and the first-month offers disappear. The yearly total is not shown on screen. The page's embedded plan data gives annual prices of 37,400, 85,400 and 191,000 cents ($374, $854 and $1,910), which is 20% off twelve monthly payments, rounded; the on-screen figures are those totals divided by twelve, rounded (our arithmetic). Both views show the same per-month credit figures. The support FAQ says 'A plan adds its credits each month, and they last until the month ends.' TRIAL WORDING: the Terms say 'There is no free trial', and the support FAQ says 'No trial, but you can try it free'. Other pages use the word trial. The cost guide (updated 28 Sept 2026) says that when the welcome credits run out, 'a card starts the trial. That clock starts then, not at signup.' The API docs say 'The trial is the one paid-feature tier with no keys' and list refusal reasons 'trial_ended', 'trial_runs_used' and 'card_required (the welcome credits are spent and the trial has not started)'. The support FAQ explains paused flows with 'A trial ended or a payment failed.' Our reading is that the $9 (Pro) or $39 (Growth) first month is the card-backed trial and the 100 welcome credits are the free part. CREDIT RATES, TWO VERSIONS: the support FAQ says 'A picture is 1 credit. A silent five-second video is 20. Sound is optional and costs more.' The homepage says 'A video is 20 credits and an image is 1', and the cost guide adds 'Rewriting a caption is 2.' All 14 free video generator pages listed at /generators (for example /generators/ai-ugc-ad-generator) open on a 5-second clip and quote '50 credits', struck through beside 'Free'. The 10 image generator pages quote 4 credits for four pictures. Each video page has a length slider running from 3 to 15 seconds. Moving it on three of those pages changed the quote to 50 credits for 3 to 5 seconds, 100 for 6 to 10 seconds, then 10 credits more for each extra second, up to 150 for 15 seconds. Their FAQ says 'Bigger requests, like longer videos with sound, cost more, and Mutator tells you before anything is spent.' The widget showed no sound setting, so we could not tell whether the 50-credit quote includes sound. Without an account we could not check what the signed-in app charges. The ChatGPT docs say prices there are 'the same as in Mutator: Generate's prices for pictures and clips'. PER-VIDEO COST (our arithmetic). At 20 credits a video, month-to-month: Pro $0.78, Growth $0.89, Studio $0.88. At the yearly per-month prices: $0.62, $0.71, $0.71. On Pro's $9 first month: $0.18. At 50 credits a clip, month-to-month: Pro $1.95, Growth about $2.23, Studio about $2.21. At the yearly per-month prices: $1.55, about $1.78, about $1.77. Per credit, Pro is 3.9 cents, Growth 4.45 cents and Studio 4.42 cents, so the larger plans buy features and seats, not cheaper credits. The cost guide itself advises planning for 'three made and one kept', which makes Pro 'nearer 16 videos you would actually post'. HOW CREDITS ARE SPENT: plan credits expire at the end of the billing period they were granted for and do not roll over. Credits from packs, and any Mutator adds itself, do not expire. Publishing, scheduling and analytics cost no credits. Credits are 'held before a provider is called, then settled at the real cost'. A failed or cancelled run returns the whole hold, and an output withheld by the content check is not charged. Changing a shot's words or length 'makes the video again, and costs what the video cost'. Editing captions and pictures afterwards is free. The MCP docs say a dry run 'costs the same credits or provider charges' as a real one. PAGES THAT DISAGREE: the Terms describe the service as 'billed monthly in advance through Stripe' and list only monthly prices, while the pricing page sells yearly billing; as of 2026-10-20 we found no statement in the Terms on yearly billing or on how a yearly plan's credits are granted. The MCP server is described as having 'Nine tools' (docs index and llms.txt), '14 tools available' (homepage demo) and 'THE 15 TOOLS' (the /mcp page, whose table leaves out mutator_list_approvals). The MCP docs table and the server's own tool list (a GET to https://mutator.app/mcp) both showed 16. The Connections page badges Pinterest 'SOON', while the privacy policy describes connecting a Pinterest account so Mutator can create pins. The homepage heads its library 'Viral formats, ready-to-use'; the MCP docs say the formats are 'a hand-written catalogue' and 'There is no virality, trending or discovery data in this product'. OTHER: plans bought in the phone apps are billed and refunded by Apple or Google. The Terms say existing subscribers are told about a price change before it applies to them. Generation can also run on your own provider account, which that provider bills you for directly, and the Terms say Mutator 'does not resell them or mark them up'. The legal notice says Bitnook GmbH is 'Not registered for VAT'. The API docs page is headed 'Public API (Studio)', which could be read as a Studio-plan feature, but the same page says 'Keys come with any paid plan' and the pricing page ticks 'API and MCP access' on all three plans.

Ratings

No third-party ratings found on Trustpilot, G2 or Capterra.

Turnaround
Mutator's ChatGPT documentation says making content takes 'about a minute for pictures, a few minutes for clips and posts'. The support FAQ says a video 'takes minutes rather than seconds' because it is made in one pass, in parts of up to fifteen seconds, and the how-it-works page says a TikTok clone takes 'A few minutes, start to finish'. A scheduled post goes out in the account's next open slot, and schedules fill up to 14 days ahead. The Terms say scheduled work 'may be delayed by a provider outage' and that Mutator 'cannot guarantee a third-party platform will accept a given post'. As of 2026-10-20 we found no delivery SLA in the Terms or on the pricing page.
Min. spend
Trying it costs $0. Every new account gets 100 credits with no card (support FAQ). That is 'five short videos or a hundred pictures' at Mutator's stated rates, or two clips at the generator pages' 50-credit quote (our arithmetic). /start also makes 'your first three posts before you pay anything'. The smallest paid step is Pro's first month at $9, then $39 a month for 1,000 credits. Pro billed yearly is shown as $31 a month. As of 2026-10-20 we found no credit-pack price on the public pages.
Usage rights
From the Terms of service, last updated 15 October 2026, on ownership: 'You keep ownership of everything you put into Mutator and everything it produces for you. We claim no rights over your content beyond what is needed to run the service for you.' On commercial use, the free generator pages answer 'Can I run these as paid ads?' with 'Yes. Download them and upload them to your ad account.' As of 2026-10-20 we found no separate licence or watermark rule for output made with the free welcome credits, either in the Terms or on the support page. On responsibility, the Terms say 'you are responsible for what goes out: that you have the rights to it, that it complies with the rules of the platforms you publish to, and that it meets the disclosure requirements that apply to AI-generated and commercial content where you are'. Mutator 'marks AI-generated posts where a platform supports it, unless you switch that setting off, but the obligation is yours.' On likeness: 'Characters that Mutator draws are not real people, and a resemblance to someone real is accidental. Using one to pass as a real person is the impersonation the rules above forbid.' You may use a photograph or recording of a real person only with their permission. Uploading one tells Mutator that the person is an adult, that they agreed to their face or voice being used for videos like yours, and that you could show that agreement if asked. The Terms bar uploading a picture of someone you do not represent (a public figure included), a picture taken from someone's account without asking, or a picture of a child. Anyone whose face or voice was used without consent can write to hello@mutator.app, and Mutator will withhold what was made from it. The Clones feature asks you to confirm that you own the source TikTok or have permission to use it. On training, as of 2026-10-20 we found no general statement in the Terms or privacy policy on whether your content is used to train AI models. The privacy policy does say that the infrastructure companies, including the generators Higgsfield and fal, process what Mutator sends them 'only to do those things, and for nothing else', and that YouTube and Pinterest connection data is not 'used to train anyone's AI models'. Prompts, uploads and generated media are also sent to Anthropic for content checks, and Anthropic 'may keep anything its own safety systems flag for up to two years'. Generated media is deleted after 90 days. Swiss law governs the Terms.
